Detox diet and juicing. Discover the truth.

Detox diet and juicing. Discover the truth.

Detox diets are one of the most questionable diet trends to pop up in recent years. Even though the drinks in this weight-loss diet are juices and smoothies made of healthy foods, like fruit and vegetables, it isn't the same as eating them in their original form.

One of the main problems associated with these is that they are made up exclusively of liquid foods. Foods ingested in this way stretch the stomach lining less and for less time than solid foods. This affects satiating mechanisms, which are triggered by the stretching of the stomach lining.
Plus, it takes much less time to ingest the food (even just 2-3 minutes), which can affect satiating mechanisms. This is due to the fact that another of the mechanisms that make us feel full is based on time. From the time we start to eat, hunger hormones take 20 minutes to have an effect on the brain. This means that eating for fewer than 20 minutes will normally cause us to eat more than we need. With weight-loss diets, slimming drinks are high in sugar, which cause our blood sugar levels to peak and, through insulin, go directly into our fat reserves (having the opposite effect of what initially leads us to go on one of these diets).
Another big difference in this type of foods is their fibre content. All of the pulp that we throw out is high in soluble fibre (fruit pulp) and non-soluble fibre (skin and seeds) both of which are highly beneficial to the body.
To sum up, it must be said that these diets restrict variety, which is key to getting all the nutrients we need from different types of foods and not falling prey to monotony and boredom, as this normally leads us to give up on a diet and gain the weight back.
