The importance of a good breakfast

We've all grown up with the idea that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If we don't eat breakfast, we won't have the strength to start the day off right. But is this really true?

We have to take into account our daily activities. If we wake up and go to work and spent half the day, or the whole day, lifting boxes, running around or cycling, or get up and do a high-intensity workout… obviously we will need more than just a light breakfast, because that could lead to hypoglycaemia and that isn’t what we want.

But what if we work in an office all day, and our activity is limited to not much more than walking to the toilets or the cafeteria a couple times? Well, clearly in this case breakfast doesn't have to be as substantial.

Our advice is to eat foods that are filling, high in fibre, proteins and healthy fat. This will help keep you from feeling hungry before lunch. Or you can have some fruit or nuts midmorning to help calm any bit of hunger you might feel. Whether you're more traditional and like having coffee and toast with ham, cheese, avocado, hummus… or you like something a bit more filling like a plain omelette, or with vegetables like mushrooms, potato or roasted sweet potato…

Avoid foods that are high in simple sugars: chocolate milk, pastries with chocolate or cream, cookies, juice… Because yes, they give you energy, but as it is all from quickly absorbed sugars, as soon as it reaches your bloodstream it disappears when the body releases insulin and can lead to hypoglycaemia, which means you will end up eating foods that aren’t as healthy midmorning because you will feel much hungrier.

Above all, don't rush and if you eat breakfast, do so calmly without distractions and with the right mentality to face the day ahead.
