Tackle aging with food

Tackle aging with food

Most of us worry about growing old and grey. We try out many cosmetic creams and do facial exercises to make wrinkles disappear.

While we cannot stop aging, one easy way to slow down the process is to take care of our bodies from the inside out.

If we follow a healthy diet, low in saturated fat and refined sugar and rich in vitamins E and A and anti oxidants, we give our bodies the nourishment they need to tackle free radicals that accelerate the process of aging.

Vitamin E, found in almonds improves skin elasticity, while vitamin A, found in carrots for example helps protect our skin along with antioxidants like those found in tomatoes and green veg.

Foods to avoid: soft drinks, juices with added sugar, foods with saturated fat like french fries, pastries and cakes and processed foods that generally have a very high salt content.

Foods to include:

  • Low-glycemic foods, like oats. High-glycemic foods have been linked to wrinkles.
  • Foods high in vitamin C, like oranges and brussel sprouts. Vitamin C helps make collagen, the protein that makes our skin strong and elastic.

  • Foods full of healthy fats like avocados and salmon(rich in omega 3) keep the skin hydrated and flexible.

  • Foods high in vitamin A like Kale and carrots strengthens the surface of our skin and increases collagen deposits, decreasing wrinkles and slowing down aging.

  • Foods high in vitamin E, as previously mentioned improve skin elasticity,ex. walnuts.

  • Amino acids in protein sources like flaxseed, eggs and meat help repair our skin cells.

Fill your plate with colorful veggies, protein and slow releasing carbs and tackle the pace of aging today!  And remember, growing old has its benefits too! With age, comes wisdom and knowledge.
